CAC2025 Keynote: Noise and Health: Are We Doing Enough in Policy and Practice?
Professor Charlotte Clark, City St. George’s, University of London
Across Europe and internationally, the evidence on the health impacts of noise exposure is clear: transportation and environmental noise are linked to sleep disturbance, impaired learning, cardiovascular disease, and reduced quality of life. Yet in Canada, health considerations are still not consistently integrated into noise policy, regulation, or everyday consulting practice.
In this keynote, Professor Charlotte Clark, a global leader in noise epidemiology and policy, will explore how different acoustic environments, from rural areas to dense cityscapes, shape health outcomes and the way we experience sound. She will address common myths in assessing noise and health, highlight the latest international policy-changing research, and show how these lessons can inform practice in Canada.
With her unique background in both research and consulting, Charlotte brings a perspective that bridges theory and application. She will offer guidance on how practitioners can better integrate health evidence into environmental assessments, project design, and communication with decision makers. This session will provide a timely update on one of the main reasons we work in acoustics: protecting health and quality of life. Whether you focus on environmental projects, urban planning, or broader acoustics practice, this keynote will equip you with a foundation of the latest science and practical insights to help move the industry toward stronger, health-informed outcomes.
